This event will be the perfect opportunity for students to learn about graduate opportunities in the environmental field *_from the Nation's top environmental schools. An NYU student-led trip
during the January intersession to an NGO bilingual school will allow
participants to: - teach Honduran children, ages 5 through 12,
alongside U.S. volunteer teachers;
- be exposed to a unique Honduran
community and an innovative
- non-profit that operates there;
- live with
a low-income Honduran family for a week (optional);
- attend educational
seminars on social and economic issues facing low-income Hondurans;
- visit the ancient Mayan ruins of Copán.
The trip will run from January

Professors Carol Gilligan, David Richards, and Frank Upham, in collaboration with the Hauser Global Law School Program, will host a talk and discussion by Professor Kazuo Sato, Professor at Chiba University in Japan. Professor Sato will discuss the result of the recent general election in Japan, introducing the possibility of representative democracy in Japan for the first time. The title of his paper is: The History of Modernization in Japan and "the Foundation of Freedom."
Professor Sato's many books include Women's Criticism of Modernization, In Praise of Friendship Between Men and Women, and Struggle Against the Stupidity of Labour.

USA Meets Europe: A Forum for Young Leaders Next Weeklong Seminar (6th – 10th November 2009, Berlin)
This is the announcement with the details of the next Weeklong Seminar that will be taking place as part of the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy’s program USA Meets Europe: A Forum for Young Leaders. The program will be taking place on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and therefore offers a unique opportunity for participants to experience this historic occasion.
The program will include lectures, seminars, and panel discussions with leading speakers from the fields of academia, politics, diplomacy, civil society, and the private sector. The event runs concurrent to the ICD program “A World Without Walls”, and the contributing speakers will include:

- Ms. Ségolène Royal* (2007 Presidential Candidate, French Socialist Party, President of the Poitou-Charentes Regional Council)

Authors Jonathan Ames, Paul Auster, Ishmael Beah, Don DeLillo, Eve Ensler, Nell Freudenberger, AM Homes, Susanna Moore, George Saunders and Art Spiegelman will take the stage with Matthew Alexander (former U.S. interrogator and author of /How to Break a Terrorist/), David Cole (author of the recently released /The Torture Memos/),
Jack Rice (former CIA case officer), and Amrit Singh (former staff attorney for the ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project) to call attention to acts of torture and abuse carried out by the United States since 9/11. The event will feature readings from recently released secret documents that have brought these abuses to light--memos, declassified communications, and testimonies by detainees--and a special presentation by Jenny Holzer.

ASMEA Annual Conference October 22-24, 2009 Washington, D.C. ONLINE REGISTRATION
A preliminary version of the schedule for ASMEA’s 2009 Annual Conference—The Middle East and Africa: Historic Connections and Strategic Bridges—is now available on our website.
The conference will feature presentations that demonstrate the inter-relationships between the two regions over time with special emphasis on the historical, political, economic, religious, security and cultural links between them.
