Answers:
Prior to Applying:
- Both tenured and non-tenured applicants alike are eligible to apply. The search committee reviews all submitted applications. NYU is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
- Positions are open with respect to rank and subfield. The Department seeks committed scholars with a rigorous theoretical approach to the study of politics.
- Again, positions are open with respect to rank and subfield; the search committee reviews all incoming applications and considers all subfields.
- This year, our department is pleased to introduce an improved online application form. One kind is specific to tenured applicants, the other is geared towards untenured applicants. Please note that regardless of the type of form submitted, tenured and untenured applications carry equal weight, and all applications will be considered by the search committee.
- This fall, we are pleased to announce that, coinciding with our department's mission to go paperless, the entire application process is electronic. We hope that this change will expedite the application review process and reduce waste of resources not only at our end, but also for the benefit of our applicants. For more information on the university-wide mission for a greener campus, please visit: http://www.nyu.edu/sustainability/.
- The search committee will consider both tenured applicants and untenured applicants, with an emphasis on assistant professors and newly-tenured associate professors.

How to Apply:
- All applicants MUST fill out the form online. Instructions for completing the application and submitting supplementary materials are included on the website.
- The online application form is available for applicants to fill out and submit starting in late August 2008.
- There is no firm application deadline since our search is conducted on a rolling basis; however, applications received by October 15, 2008 have the best chance of being fully considered.
- In order to apply, the applicant must be able to provide the items listed in the instructions on the appropriate online application page. If the applicant for some reason is unable to provide one of these items, the applicant should note in the cover letter his/her reason for not including the item.
- Yes, every component of the application should be submitted electronically. If for some reason the applicant is unable to do so with their supplementary materials (e.g., letters of recommendation), materials may be faxed to our secure e-fax number, (646) 349-3092, as outlined in our application instructions. If under special circumstances materials cannot be submitted online or faxed, they may be delivered in hard copy via post to the departmental mailing address: 19 West 4th Street, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10012. Please remember to direct mail items to the attention of the Politics Search Committee. Additionally, please be advised that in order to be considered for a position in the department, the online application MUST be filled out and submitted electronically. Furthermore, you may expect a delay in the processing of your application if your supplementary materials are submitted in paper (rather than electronic) form.
- Applicants can rest assured that the information they submit through our secure website will be kept confidential.
- For the initial application procedure, unofficial copies are sufficient; however, please be prepared to provide official copies of your materials if requested by the search committee to do so.

Completing Your Application:
- How do I know my application has been successfully submitted online?
- I've filled out the online application form and hit submit. Do I need to do anything else to complete my application?
- Those specializing in more than one subfield only need to submit the online application once. Applicants will be considered for all of the subfields they indicate as their specialties in their application. Duplicates will be ignored.
- The most recent submission will be kept, and the prior discarded.
- You will receive an automated electronic confirmation upon completion and submission of the online application form. Due to the volume of applications, we cannot notify applicants individually.
- You do not need to mail in a paper copy of your application materials; in fact, you are discouraged to submit hard copies of your materials. Electronic submissions are encouraged and highly preferred.
- If you are missing a component of your application, its review may be delayed. Unfortunately, we are unable to contact individual applicants to remind them to submit missing components. Please be sure, then, to review your materials before submitting them and follow up with your professional references.
- Once you have submitted your complete application, you do not need to do anything more. We will contact you if (and only if) we would like additional information concerning your application profile.
- Supplementary materials may be submitted to our secure e-fax number, (646) 349-3092 (our preferred method; see instructions on online application), or by e-mailing politics.recruitment@nyu.edu.

Checking the Status of Your Application:
- Review of applications will begin after September 1, 2008 and continue on a rolling basis until the search is concluded.
- Due to measures that must be taken to ensure application confidentiality, we cannot inform you of your individual standing with the search committee upon request.
- If you have already submitted your application, and have recently received recognition for an achievement, you may update your application profile by submitting updates to our secure e-fax number, (646) 349-3092 (our preferred method; see instructions on online application), or by e-mailing politics.recruitment@nyu.edu.
- We will initiate contact with any applicants whom we would like to consider in the final rounds of our search.
- If we would like to interview an applicant, we will intiate the invitation to interview by contacting the applicant directly.
- Please keep in mind that since we conduct a rolling search, however, we do not have firm cut-off dates. Nonetheless, if three months have passed since the date of submitting your application, and you still have not heard from our search committee, it is likely that we have gone with other applicants who better match our interests.
- While we make every effort to respond to individual inquiries, due to the overwhelming influx of applications to our department, we do not have the capacity to follow up with applicants who do not match our current requirements for a position within our department. Those whose candidacy matches our needs will be contacted if more information is required.
