Information on Sponsoring Visiting Scholars

Guidelines for Visiting Scholars

If you would like to sponsor an individual for NYU’s Visiting Scholar Program, please be sure to note the following:

  1. In order to qualify for the Visiting Scholars Program, the sponsored individual must have a conferred PhD prior to his/her arrival.

  1. Visiting Scholars are not given office space, except under rare special circumstances (which would also require prior authorization). Furthermore, they are responsible for finding their own housing. However, they will have access to Bobst Library and our data labs. In addition, they may audit classes.

  1. Scholars who are not citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. must go through the Office of International Scholar Services (OISS) in order to obtain an appropriate visa. Please provide our department's Administrative Aide with the scholar’s e-mail address so that the preliminary visa application process for the individual may be initiated with the OISS.

  1. For international scholars, please plan ahead at least three months prior to their anticipated date of arrival at NYU. For domestic scholars, please allow a minimum of three weeks prior to their start date for all paperwork to be approved.

  1. The length of stay for international Visiting Scholars is limited as follows*:
    1. For “Short-term Scholars”: six months
    2. For “Specialists”: one year
    3. For “Professors” or “Research Scholars”: three years

* includes any previous continuous time spent at other institutions

  1. Prior to applying for the NYU Visiting Scholar Program, all international Visiting Scholars must be able to show proof of financial support – the minimum amount required is $2,000 per month for personal living expenses (more if the scholar has dependents). In addition, they should ensure that they will have health insurance coverage during their stay at NYU.

  1. If you believe the individual you would like to sponsor can meet the above criteria, please advise him/her to e-mail the following documents to our department's Administrative Aide:
    1. The approximate dates s/he expects to begin and end his/her appointment as a Visiting Scholar at NYU
    2. A copy of his/her most recent CV, which should include date of birth, permanent address, and telephone number
    3. A research statement of any length

Special Cases – “Visiting Students”

** For Visiting Scholars who do NOT hold a conferred PhD **

  1. Scholars who do not hold a conferred PhD must complete an extra preliminary step in order to be a “Visiting Student.” Visiting Students must first apply as a non-degree seeking student and gain admission to the Graduate School of Arts & Science through the FAS Office of Enrollment. (Note: Students need only to complete the first five pages of the GSAS application and submit it along with their undergraduate transcript.)

  1. In order to have all paperwork approved, you must be able to provide a justifiable reason for sponsoring a scholar who lacks a conferred PhD.

  1. Visiting Students should be prepared to pay the non-refundable Visiting Student Tuition & Fees for each semester they are enrolled at NYU as a Visiting Student.
    1. For Fall 2007, the tuition and fees are as follows:

                                                               i.      Tuition, $425

ii.      Fees, $310 domestic students/$395 international students.

    1. For Spring 2008, the tuition and fees are as follows:

                                                               i.      Tuition, $425

ii.      Services Fee, $335 domestic students/$410 international students.

  1. Visiting Students do not register for courses; it is expected that the purpose of the visit is not merely to enroll in courses (but rather, for example, to engage in research with the faculty sponsor).

  1. The maximum length of stay for Visiting Students is one year.

  1. International Visiting Students must also show proof of financial support (minimum $2,000 per month).
