Ghostscript is an interpreter for Postscript files. Postscript is a file format for creating static (non-editable) documents. Many printers have built-in support for Postscript files, so it is useful for distributing documents which are intended to be printed. In this sense a Postscript (or "PS") file is similar to a PDF. In fact, PDF is derived from Postscript. Ghostscript is used by several programs, including MiKTeX, to create PDF documents.

GSView is a program for viewing Postscript files. What Acrobat Reader is for PDF files, GSView is for PS files. Since PDF is related to PS, GSView can display PDFs as well, though not always as accurately as Acrobat Reader.
